Oryx Pharmaceuticals Signs Agreement for PhaSeal®, for Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs
Mississauga, Ontario - April 4, 2002 — Oryx Pharmaceuticals Inc., a new Canadian pharmaceutical company, has signed an exclusive agreement with Carmel Pharma of Sweden for the Canadian distribution rights to PhaSeal®, a system for the safe handling of cytotoxic drugs.
PhaSeal is a completely sealed system that provides a safer working environment for pharmacy personnel and oncology nursing staff involved in the preparation and handling of cytotoxic agents. PhaSeal virtually eliminates the potential for drug leakage and contamination during the preparation, administration and waste handling of harmful anti-cancer agents. The unique sealed system has two patented features; the double membrane and a built-in pressure equalization technique, which result in documented effectiveness.
Scientific studies have shown contamination by cytotoxic agents on working trays, floors, vials and on outside surfaces of safety cabinets. Several studies have also shown the presence of cytotoxic drugs in the urine of personnel preparing and administering them.
At the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, one of the largest cancer hospitals in the U.S.A., a clinical evaluation of the PhaSeal system was conducted over six months comparing the PhaSeal system to standard techniques. The levels of cytotoxic drug contamination were barely detectable when PhaSeal was used, whereas high levels of contamination of the control group were recorded throughout the study. The conclusion was that PhaSeal was a superior system. PhaSeal successfully contained the harmful drugs and reduced the level of environmental contamination.
